Dawgs finish runner-up to Betsy Layne in 58th District

EASTERN — Lawrence County finished runner-up to Betsy Layne in the 58th District Boys' Basketball Tournament. Betsy Layne held on to beat the Bulldogs 67-64 in the 58th District boys' basketball title game at Floyd Central High School on Friday, Feb. 25.
Lawrence County faced a single digit deficit at the conclusion of each quarter in the district championship game.
Betsy Layne edged Lawrence County 17-15 in the first quarter. Then, adding to its advantage, Betsy Layne outscored the Bulldogs 22-16 in the second quarter to lead 39-31 at halftime.
Lawrence County managed to cut into Betsy Layne's lead early in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 15-11 in the third quarter.
But Betsy Layne fended off the Bulldogs late in the district championship game.
Andrew Kidd scored a team-high 23 points to pace the Bobcats. In addition to Kidd reaching double figures for the Bobcats, Jordan Frazier scored 17 points and Chase Mims netted 11 points.
Nearly reaching double figures for the Bobcats, Brady Robinson added nine points.
Chipping in offensively for Betsy Layne, Cameron Pente and Shawn Howell contributed five points and two points, respectively.
Cody Maynard scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Bulldogs.
Accompanying Maynard in double figures for the Bulldogs, Trenton Adkins and Andrew Bloomfield netted 13 points apiece.
Rounding out Lawrence County's individual scoring, Kaden Gillispie added seven points and Dawson Bellamy contributed three points.
The All-58th District Boys' Basketball Team selections from Lawrence County were Maynard, Adkins, Gillispie, Will Lafferty and Tyler Johnson.
Both Betsy Layne (22-7) and Lawrence County (24-7) advanced to the 15th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament at the Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville.
