Cardinals due to kick off season at Phelps

INEZ—Following moves from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, Martin County has revised its schedule for the 2020 football season. The Cardinals are scheduled to kick off the 2020 football season at Phelps on Friday, Sept. 11. Martin County dominated when the two teams met during the 2019 high school football season, rolling past Phelps 48-8 in Inez. The Cardinals concluded the 2019 high school football season 7-4. Martin County's 2019 season ended following a loss to Shelby Valley in the opening round of the Class 2A State Playoffs. Martin County notched wins over Betsy Layne, Magoffin County, Phelps, Bath County, East Ridge, Prestonsburg and Middlesboro in 2019. During the 2019 high school football season, Martin County outscored opponents 306-224. Phelps finished the 2019 high school football season 4-7 following a loss to Hazard in the opening round of the Class 1A State Playoffs. Hazard topped Phelps 36-8 in the postseason matchup. Opponents outscored the Hornets 362-222 during the 2019 high school football season. Phelps notched wins over East Ridge, Harlan, Betsy Layne and Sayre in 2019.
High school football teams from throughout the state have been revising, finalizing and releasing schedules for the upcoming campaign. Prep football teams from throughout the state are scheduled to open preseason practice on Monday, Aug. 24.
