Bulldogs beat East Carter 26-14

LOUISA — Lawrence County managed to defeat East Carter 26-14 in the first round of the 2022 Class 3A UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals at Luke Varney Jr. Memorial Stadium on Friday, Nov. 4.

The Bulldogs improved to 9-2 after registering the win and advanced to the second round of the Class 3A UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals.

The loss eliminated East Carter, which dropped to 6-5, from the high school football postseason.

Lawrence County overcame a slow start to claim the win.

East Carter reached the endzone first during the opening quarter. The Raiders led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter but couldn’t maintain their early momentum.

Lawrence County scored three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 20-7 lead into halftime.

Extending its lead after halftime, East Carter added another touchdown in the third quarter to move ahead 26-7.

Lawrence County rushed 34 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns. Dylan Ferguson paced Lawrence County on the ground, rushing 16 times for 78 yards and touchdowns. Following Ferguson, Ryan Marcum rushed seven times for 50 yards and one touchdown for the Bulldogs. Along with Marcum’s effort on the ground, Cody Crum rushed seven times for 30 yards and one touchdown in Lawrence County’s win.

Talan Pollock paced Lawrence County through the air, completing five of seven passes for 108 yards and one touchdown.

Jake Derifield hauled in a 68-yard touchdown pass reception for the Bulldogs.

Also making an impact through the air, Logan Southers reeled in two receptions for 28 yards in Lawrence County’s victory.

Thriving in the secondary, Pollock and Derifield each recorded one interception for the Bulldogs.

Lawrence County is scheduled to host Greenup County in the second round of the 2022 Class 3A UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals on Friday, Nov. 11. Kickoff for the Lawrence County-Greenup County game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
