INEZ — Martin County magistrates held a special meeting on Friday, March 26, to appoint long-time District 5 Magistrate Victor Slone to temporarily fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Martin County Judge Bill Davis.

Davis made the announcement earlier in the week and said his resignation would be effective March 26. He offered no information regarding why he was resigning his post, and did not return calls from The Big Sandy News seeking comment.

Deputy Judge-Executive Steve Goble also resigned, but was not available to answer questions about his departure and he did not offer an explanation.

The magistrates voted unanimously to make Slone the foreman of the meeting and then to have Slone act as judge pro tem to hold the position until Gov. Andy Beshear appoints someone to fill the post.

Slone also provided information regarding how someone could apply for the remainder of term for judge-executive, saying that applications would not be accepted in the judge’s office.

Applicants for the position can visit the governor’s website at https://governor.ky.gov/, locate the drop-down menu labeled “services,” click on “application for boards and commissions,” and then follow the instructions.

After the fiscal court members voted to make Slone the pro tem judge-executive, they voted unanimously to remove both Davis and Goble from signing checks and to authorize Slone to sign them so they could continue to conduct regular business.

The fiscal court also voted during the special meeting to approve the financials, but for a bill from Howell’s Recycling, which was tabled.
