PRESTONSBURG – In-person instruction was short-lived for several students in the Floyd County School District last week as one classroom at Prestonsburg Elementary was placed on quarantine after a student tested positive for COVID-19.“We have been informed that a student has tested positive and as a result, a 3rd grade classroom at Prestonsburg Elementary has been placed on a 14 day quarantine by the Floyd County Health Department,” Floyd County Superintendent Danny Adkins said in a letter posted Sunday on Facebook. “School administrators are contacting the parents of the children in this particular classroom. Contact tracing will be ongoing through next week and this contact will be made by the Floyd County Health Department Contact Tracing Team with instructions and a release date.” The news followed a rough week for the Floyd County district as one student and more than a dozen staff members at Prestonsburg Elementary were quarantined earlier in the week after an employee tested positive for COVID-19.“As a result of discussions with our health officials, we have 13 staff members in quarantine and 1 student,” Adkins said in a letter last Wednesday, Sept. 30. “These quarantines are the result of separate contact situations. Again, we made these decisions with input from the Floyd County Health Department. We will provide our community with the information that we can. ”On Friday, Adkins reported that the Floyd County Health Department had placed quarantine the Betsy Layne High School football team, dance team and all cheerleaders and coaches who attended cheerleading practice on Tuesday, Sept. 29.School officials “always want to be as transparent with our students, staff and community at all times,” Adkins said. “We will provide you with as much information as we can so you can make the best decisions for you and your family,” Adkins said. “We want all our students – your children – to be in the safest environment that we can provide.” Adkins said the school district is following Centers for Disease Control and Healthy at School guidelines and “will continue to do what we can to reduce any risk to our students, staff and community.”
