Police Conducts Death Investigation in Auxier area of Floyd County
AUXIER — The Kentucky State Police Pikeville Post received a call on Friday, April 25, at 2:57 p.m., regarding a shooting in the Auxier community of Floyd County.
KSP troopers and investigators responded to an area near the Auxier bridge where they discovered one subject had been shot.
The initial investigation indicated Steven Adkins, 48 years old of Prestonsburg suffered a fatal gunshot wound during a physical altercation with Larry Johnson, 67 years old of Auxier. Adkins was pronounced deceased at Highland Regional Medical Center.
Larry Johnson fled the scene in a vehicle, which was later located; however, he fled on foot into a wooded area near Jane Brown Branch. He was last seen wearing a blue flannel shirt and blue jeans. KSP investigators have obtained an active arrest warrant for murder on Larry Johnson.
Detective Logan Hillerman is leading the investigation. He was assisted on scene by KSP personnel, Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, Prestonsburg Police Department, and Lifeguard Ambulance Service.
Update to the story: Larry Johnson was located and taken into custody on Saturday, April 26. He was lodged in the Floyd County Detention Center.
Johnson appeared in in Floyd County District Court on Monday, April 28 and charged with murder. His bond was set for $5 million dollars. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Monday, May 5, at 1:30 p.m.
