PIKEVILLE — Numerous tips led to the arrest Saturday of a Pike County man who stole a parked vehicle at gunpoint at a Prestonsburg business last week. The Prestonsburg Police Department said Friday that a man with a pistol in his hand jumped out of a Kia Optima and stole a parked car at an unidentified business in Prestonsburg. The stolen vehicle was later identified as a black Mustang. “There is now a video of the entire theft and a picture of the individual who committed it,” a release from the Prestonsburg Police Department said, adding that officers were at The Grey Area, a local business, “looking at their amazing cameras right now and will post a video shortly.” The Prestonsburg and Pikeville police departments both received tips Saturday of the Optima involved in the car theft, according to an updated release, and Pikeville officers responded to the Cassidy Boulevard area and located the vehicle as it pulled next an another vehicle parked on the side of the road. “Patrick Adkins of Kimper was found to be in the vehicle used to commit the theft in Prestonsburg and was wearing the same cap as he was the day of the theft,” the release said. “He was also in possession of a toy gun with the orange marker torn off that he had in Prestonsburg as well.” After Prestonsburg Sgt. Ross Shurtleff arrived on the scene, Adkins was identified as the individual that committed the theft, the release said, adding that the stolen Mustang was recovered by Pikeville police in Kimper shortly after Adkins was stopped. The Optima was determined to have been stolen as well as reported by Kentucky State Police, the release said. Adkins and “other conspirators” who were not identified were lodged in the Pike County Detention Center on numerous felony charges and warrants. “We would like to give our sincerest thanks to the Pikeville Police Department for their outstanding response and assistance in this investigation, as well as to the tipsters who have assisted us in looking for the vehicle,” the Prestonsburg department said in the release.
