Man dies after tree falls on him

PIGEON ROOST — An elderly man who had recently retired died Friday at his residence when a tree he was cutting on his property fell on him.Martin County Coroner Chris Todd said that Lynn Estel Stanley, 70, of Pilgrim, died as a result of blunt force trauma due to the tree falling on him.Todd said that he pronounced Stanley dead at 11:55 a.m.Todd also thanked the Martin County Rescue Squad for helping him get the tree off Stanley.Stanley was of the United Baptist Faith and served in the U.S. Army in 1970. He retired from the workforce after 54 years.Stanley is survived by his wife, Minzie (Newsome) Stanley; two sons, Benjamin Stanley of Georgetown and Jeffrey Stanley of Martin County; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Jarrell, also of Martin County; and five grandchildren.Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 31, in the chapel of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home in Paintsville, with burial in Stanley Family Cemetery at Pilgrim.
