PRESTONSBRUG — Heavy rain and thunderstorms caused major flooding Tuesday in a section of Floyd County, according to Judge-Executive Robbie Williams.

“We’ve got major flooding in District One,” Williams said in a video posted on Facebook after 1 p.m. Tuesday. “It looks like Cow Creek, the road is currently impassable.”

Flooding was also reported at Main Abbott, Copper Slick and Bull Creek, Williams said.

Williams reminded motorists not to attempt to drive through “water standing on the roads.”

“It appears this rain is going to be continuing for a couple of days,” he said. “It looks like we may have some heavier stuff coming in this afternoon.”

Williams said the flooding was isolated at that time to the District 1 area of Floyd County, which includes Prestonsburg.

“It appears we’re going to get up to five inches of rain over the course of the next couple of days,” Williams said. “Hopefully, if it will slow down and it’s just a steady rain, we can deal with that a heck of a lot better than we can a constant downpour.”

Floyd County was included in a flash flood warning issued at 12:44 p.m. Tuesday by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson. The warning expired at 2:45 p.m. Southern Johnson County, Martin County, Northwestern Pike County and Magoffin County were also included in the warning.

The NWS said that between 3 and 4 inches of rain had fallen at the time the warning was issued and that an additional 1 inch was possible in the affected areas.

The situation would cause flash flooding of “small creeks and streams, urban areas, highway, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas,” the NWS said.

“Multiple road closures and impacts to homes have been reported across the warned area,” the NWS said. “Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...Paintsville, Prestonsburg, Salyersville, Inez, Mason, Coal Run Village, Martin, Forest Hills, Warfield, Allen, Corn Fork Hollow, Dicks Creek, Alvin, Emma, Lancer, Endicott, Dwale, Beaver Junction, Allen City and Banner.”

The NWS also issued a flood watch in effect through Wednesday evening.
