Fiscal court recognizes athletes for achievements

LOUISA — Most of the Lawrence County Fiscal Court’s regular meeting Tuesday was devoted to proclamations recognizing students for their achievements in sports.

The LCHS girls’ basketball team and its coach, Melinda Feltner, were present to accept a proclamation honoring them for their success in 2022-2023, which include the first-ever trip to the girls’ state tournament.

The fiscal court also presented LCHS standout Kensley Feltner with a proclamation recognizing her for being Player of the Year and a member of the 4,000th-point Club.

The fiscal court presented LCHS boys’ basketball coach Chandler Thompson with a proclamation honoring the team for their success.

LCHS cheerleading coach Jennifer Pannell was present to accept a proclamation on behalf of the squad.

Wrestling coaches Josh Diamond and Scott Powell accepted a proclamation honoring the youth and middle school wrestling champions, who were also recognized at the Capitol in Frankfort on March 1.

In addition to the proclamations honoring the students for their success, the court also did a proclamation declaring April 7,as Arbor Day.

Lawrence County Judge Executive Phillip Carter also recognized the achievements of students at Louisa East Elementary and Fallsburg Elementary for academic success; the art class; the Lawrence County High School carpentry class for obtaining its OSHA 10; the Lawrence County High School Choir for participating in All-District; and LCHS students who became certified in using the AED and CPR.

During the regular business of the fiscal court meeting, members approved the acceptance of 2023-2024 Jail Budget pending any amendments.

The fiscal court unanimously approved the Lawrence County Clerk’s 2022 Financial Report and pending an audit accepted the County Clerk’s Excess fees in the amount of $80,958.78.

The fiscal court approved a resolution of Adoption of FIVCO Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan Update, which Lawrence County Deputy Judge Vince Doty explained was necessary for them to be able to apply for certain grants.

The court unanimously approved to open a new bank account at First State Bank for Blaine CDBG. Doty explained that they had an account before but due to inactivity, the account was closed and since they have applied for a second grant they need to open a new account.

The fiscal court unanimously approved a resolution for voting equipment. Lawrence County Clerk, Chris Jobe explained that they were eligible to apply for up to $96,000 so they could try to re-coop some of the money spend on voting machines.

The court also voted unanimously to request bids for property in the Industrial Park for two weeks.

“Feb. 16, we had a declaration and FEMA has been here and it will amount to several hundred thousand dollars,” Carter said. “We had a lot of road breaks, slips and other problems and as soon as we finalize, we will do those repairs.”

Lawrence County School Superintendent Dr. Robbie Fletcher thanked the court for recognizing the students and announced that graduation will be May 19, at 7 p.m. and the last day for students would be May 22.

In other business, a U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Representative was present to pass out flyers and to tell everyone some of the events that are up and coming at the lake; the court approved the minutes of the Feb. 21 meeting; the second reading of budget amendment 4; the Treasurer’s request; the bills and the Treasurer’s report.

Andrew Mortimer
