County to ‘strictly enforce’ mandatory trash collection

LOUISA — Lawrence County solid waste coordinator Jim Burchett put citizens on notice last week that the mandatory garbage collection requirement of the county’s trash ordinance will be “strictly enforced” beginning Jan. 1, 2021.
Burchett said that anyone who does not have trash collection service established must contact one of the franchised service providers to do so.
Burchett offered a list of franchised trash collectors and their contact information. including Express Sanitation, Endicott Sanitation, Perkins Sanitation, Marcum Sanitation and Apple Valley Sanitation.

The county’s solid waste ordinance gives the solid waste coordinator enforcement powers necessary to implement all components of the solid waste management plan.
The ordinance says the solid waste coordinator shall have police powers in the enforcement of the ordinance.
Penalties for violating any of the provisions of the ordinance or any lawful rules or regulations in include a one-year jail sentence
And a $500 for each offense or both, provided that each day’s violation shall be a separate offense. Violators of the ordinance may be issued a citation by the Lawrence County sheriff, an authorized police officer and/or solid waste coordinator, the ordinance says.
