Case numbers slide in four counties

The number of positive COVID-19 cases dropped considerably in Lawrence, Johnson, Floyd and Martin counties.

A total of 272 new cases were reported in the four counties between Tuesday, Dec. 7, and Monday, Dec. 13, compared to 381 reported during the previous seven-day period.

New cases included 91 in Lawrence County, 36 in Johnson County, 114 in Floyd County and 31 in Martin County.

Active cases on Monday included 81 in Lawrence County, 119 in Johnson County, 182 in Floyd County and 79 in Martin County.

Lawrence County reported a coronavirus-related death on Monday, bringing its total to 50. Johnson County has reported 68 deaths and Martin County has had 37 since the pandemic began in March 2020.

The Floyd County Health Department does not include the number of COVID-19-related deaths in its daily reports.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the four counties since March 2020 was 17,728 on Monday, including 3,064 in Lawrence, 4,568 in Johnson, 7,806 in Floyd and 2,290 in Martin.

All four counties were in the red zone on Monday on the state’s COVID-19 incidence rate map with rates of 76.5 in Lawrence, 29.6 in Johnson, 40.9 in Floyd and 53.6 in Martin.
