Candidate filing deadline extended

FRANKFORT – Kentuckians thinking about running for local offices have a little more time to make their decision.
The General Assembly passed legislation that declares an emergency and extends the candidate filing deadline for this year’s primary to Jan. 25.
House Bill 172 was approved Friday, which was the initial filing deadline for the May 17 primary.
The extension does not affect candidates for non-partisan city and school board races; the filing deadline for those is June 7.
More than 100 candidates had filed for primary races in Lawrence, Johnson, Floyd and Martin counties prior to Friday’s deadline extension, with the vast majority being Republicans. Many of the races have no Democratic candidates, which could change prior to the Jan. 25 deadline.
Local races, including those for county judge-executive, sheriff and county clerk, are up for grabs this year along with judicial, and state and federal legislative seats.
