BSCTC hosts successful Cornhole Tournament to aid flood relief efforts

PRESTONSBURG – Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) recently hosted a cornhole tournament to support flood relief efforts, drawing an impressive turnout from the community. With 30 players representing six counties and two states, the event highlighted the power of unity and generosity in times of crisis.

“The turnout for the event from the community was great,” said Greg Gambill, adjunct faculty member and tournament organizer. “We had 30 players attend this flood relief event, some from as far away as Georgetown. We also had at least eight community members volunteer to help run the tournament.”

BSCTC faculty and staff further supported the event. Professor Toufic Saad engaged with participants, including a former student who was thrilled to reconnect with him. Additionally, Interim Chief Academic Officer (CAO) Jessica Gambill dedicated seven hours to working concessions, ensuring guests were well-fed and comfortable throughout the day.

“This cornhole fundraiser strengthened the bond between BSCTC and the surrounding community by creating a fun, collaborative event that brought people together for a common cause,” Gambill added. “By hosting such an event, the college demonstrated its commitment to the community’s well-being, showing that it’s not just an educational institution but an active, caring community member.”

Beyond its immediate impact, the fundraiser laid the groundwork for future community engagement initiatives. With strong partnerships formed with Old Timer’s Cornhole and Corntucky, there is potential for the event to become an annual tradition.

“Hopefully, we won’t need to host another for disaster relief, but this could evolve into a fundraiser for scholarships, general welfare, or other beneficial causes for our school and community,” Gambill noted.

The funds raised from the tournament will provide essential supplies such as food, shelter, and medical care to those affected by the recent flooding, aiding in the immediate recovery process. More than just a fundraiser, the event embodied the spirit of resilience and collaboration, reinforcing BSCTC’s role as a cornerstone of the community.
