Bridge Deck Restoration Backing Up and Slowing Down Motorists

Bridge deck restoration on the Louisa/Fort Gay, WV bridge is proving to be a nuisance for many as morning and evening traffic is backed up all through both towns.

However, transportation supervisor for Lawrence County Schools Rick Blackburn and LC Superintendent Katie Webb said it hasn’t been as bad as they anticipated picking kids up and dropping them off at Louisa East and West schools so far as the restoration only started Monday.

Vince Doty, assistant to the LC Judge Executive said he really doesn’t know how this is all going to play out with the large crowd that Septemberfest (scheduled Sept 11-12) draws in every year with some of the streets that are used for detours during the festival being closed down by the state for the two-month bridge restoration.

A press release from the Dept. of Transportation stated that motorists should expect changing traffic patterns, signal-controlled traffic and delays. This is a high-volume area with traffic moving in several directions, so please pay close attention to signs and temporary signals.

Temporary traffic signals are controlling traffic through the work zone and crews are expected to work approximately 7 a.m.-8 p.m., with possible night and weekend work.

The department also warned to expect delays, especially during concrete pours and while signal timing is adjusted.

Water Street and Vinson Avenue traffic will not be able to access KY 3/East Madison Street and should use South Main Cross Street.

Emergency and official school vehicles will be accommodated. The project is expected to continue through early November, weather permitting.

Please slow down, stay alert and be patient in this busy work zone. Never by-pass traffic control devices or enter a closed lane.
