The Martin County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday Jan. 31, they had not only lost a valued member of the community, but someone who felt like one of their own.
“It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of one of our own, James Ernest “Ernie” Fannin. He was a dedicated volunteer deputy for Sheriff John Kirk for many years and also worked for former Sheriff Ray Fields. Ernie had a big heart, always putting others before himself. He always had a story to tell about his time in the military or working in the mines. We loved to hear him laugh and he will be greatly missed.”
Fannin, 80, of Inez, passed away Thursday, Jan. 30, and before becoming a dedicated volunteer for MCSO he worked at Martiki Coal Company and was a Martin County Road foreman. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church.
Fannin was known to love serving his community and his love for riding his motorcycle, laughter and life.
Survivors include girlfriend, Betty Preece; a daughter, Wendy Fannin; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.
Services were Sunday, Feb. 2, at Crum Funeral Home, Inez.
